MALAY POSTNATAL THERAPEUTIC TREATMENT


POSTNATAL MASSAGE


Definition
It is a deep tissue and therapeutic body massage.  This massage is conducted by an experience postnatal therapist, confinement lady or masseuse.


Aims
It focuses on restoring the woman's body to its pre-pregnancy condition where it helps to realign body weight to its original distribution, and tones over-stretched areas of skin.  Massage increases circulation which helps with the removal of excess fluids and reduces swelling and speeds the total healing process.





TUNGKU (HOT COMPRESSION)

Definition
It is a form of point massage using heated objects.  




Aims of Tungku (Hot Compression)

  • Reduce pain
  • Reduce muscle spasm
  • Reduce congestions of non-inflammatory origin
  • Stimulates endorphin production and promotes relaxation
  • Stimulates the absorption of cellular debris during healing of injuries
  • Alleviates or relieves stress and prevent health problems
  • Improve bowel movement, promote flatus and defecation.

The tungku besi or the river is first heated, then wrapped with daun mengkudu (morinda citrifolia).  In case if you couldn't find one, you can also use daun sirih (piper betel), pandan leaves or banana leaves and wrapped it inside the cloth for aromatherapy purpose while conducting the tungku session.
Daun mengkudu and daun sirih is known for their therapeutic value.

In general, tungku is normally done during postnatal treatments but generally can be practised on clients of all ages and sex.

BENGKUNG (BODY WRAPPING / TUMMY BINDING)


Definition
Bengkung is made of cloth, which will tightly wrapped around the women's waist.


Aims
It provides lower abdominal support and helps realigned the spine to its normal shape.

PARAM, PILIS AND TAPEL

Param
Can be found in the powder form.
Normally, it is applied on to the skin after bath throughout confinement.  Param is applied on the whole body for warming effect especially on the hands and feet.  



Aims

  • To enhance blood circulation and minimize water retention in the body.
  • Helps to soften and rejuvenate the skin.



Pilis
Pilis can be found either in the form of powder or paste.  
Pilis is applied on the forehead to refresh mothers who may find themselves lacking sleep and experiencing heaviness around the eyes.


Aims
  • Relieves from headaches, dizziness and feeling faint.
  • Avoiding high blood pressure.
  • Soothing tired eyes




Tapel
Tapel can be found in powder form and to be applied on to the abdominal area after the massage session.


Aims
  • To tighten and firm up the abdominal area after birth
  • Helps to burn fat
  • Eliminates winds in the body
